Two individuals have been feared dead, and another critically injured as a clash erupted between youths and military officers at a checkpoint in Maraban Jema’a area of Jos South Local Government Area in Plateau State. The clash instigated panic in the vicinity, with people scrambling for safety.
Furthermore, the highway connecting Maraban Jema’a to Zerwan Junction, a route leading to Jos city, was completely deserted, devoid of any vehicular movement at the time of reporting.
The conflict originated when a group of mourners, transporting a corpse from a mortuary to a burial ground, arrived at the checkpoint. Many of these mourners, primarily comprised of youths, were riding motorcycles. Upon reaching the checkpoint, the military personnel instructed them to dismount from their motorcycles and manually push them through the checkpoint area.
Reportedly, the youths did not comply with this directive but attempted to negotiate with the officers instead. Unfortunately, both parties failed to reach a consensus, resulting in the escalation of tensions and subsequent shootings.
According to a source from the area, three youths were shot during the confrontation. “One died instantly, and the other passed away in the hospital where they were rushed to,” the source disclosed.
Enraged by the shootings, the agitated youths began staging a demonstration, eventually setting the military vehicle ablaze as a show of protest.
