“You’re Dïrtying Nigeria, Not Fela’s Family” — Yeni Kuti Tells Wizkid Amid Féud

Yeni Kuti, daughter of Afrobeat legend Fela Anikulapo-Kuti, has called for calm amid the ongoing conflict involving singer Wizkid and the Kuti family, cautioning that the public dispute is damaging Nigeria’s image.

Speaking on TVC’s The View, Yeni expressed deep respect for Wizkid but voiced disappointment that he did not act sooner to prevent the escalating backlash.

“I love Wizkid a lot. He’s my padi, my small friend. We’ve come a long way together. I remember when he started at the Shrine as a backup singer during Felabration,” she said.

Yeni emphasized that she had chosen not to engage in exchanging insults, noting that public clashes only hurt those not involved.

“When two giants fight, it’s the grass that suffers,” she remarked.

Appealing for reconciliation, she urged all sides to resolve their differences, particularly as Nigeria prepares to honor Fela’s legacy on the global stage.

“We are one people. We’re about to celebrate our icon at the Grammy, and you’re all doing this. You’re not dirtying Fela or his family; you’re dirtying Nigeria,” she stated.

She also questioned why Fela continues to be targeted decades after his passing, describing it as a testament to his lasting impact.

“Fela has been dead for 27 years, and you are still mentioning his name. That is the answer to his greatness,” Yeni said.

She encouraged critics to settle their disputes among themselves and leave the late icon’s legacy out of the conflict.

“Fight yourselves, you that are alive, and leave the man that has done his own and gone,” she added.
