A hospital in Toulouse, France, was partially evacuated after doctors performing emergency surgery on a patient discovered a live World War I artillery shell inside his body.
The incident unfolded late Saturday night at Rangueil Hospital when a 24-year-old man sought emergency care for severe abdominal pain. Physicians, learning he had inserted a large object, proceeded with urgent surgery.
During the procedure, they were stunned to find the object was an unexploded artillery shell from 1918.
Bomb disposal specialists were urgently summoned, with firefighters placed on high alert. As a precaution, staff and patients were moved from the immediate vicinity, and a security perimeter was established around the emergency unit. The 20-centimeter (approximately 8-inch) shell was later rendered safe.
The patient, a French citizen, is likely to face police questioning as authorities investigate potential legal breaches concerning the possession of prohibited explosive material. While officials have not disclosed how he obtained the shell, preliminary local reports hint at personal issues as a possible context.
