The World Bank has praised President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, stating that Nigeria has become a regular case study for successful reform implementation in international discourse.
This commendation was delivered by the World Bank’s Managing Director of Operations, Anna Bjerde, during a meeting at the State House in Abuja. Bjerde noted that the outcomes of Nigeria’s reforms over the last two years are a frequent topic among global leaders, policymakers, and investors.
“Nigeria is a frequent example in my discussions around the world because the results achieved in two years are really commendable,” Bjerde stated. She lauded the President’s steadfast leadership through difficulties, adding, “Even when reform implementation is difficult, there is no turning back. You are staying the course.”
She also disclosed that new initiatives, including a reform-linked budget support programme and enhanced risk guarantees, are being developed. “Your reforms and our budget support go hand in hand,” she emphasized.
In his response, President Tinubu declared that his administration’s reform agenda is irreversible. “Since we went into this turn of reform, we are never going to look back. We have our hands on the plough,” he affirmed.
The President acknowledged the initial hardship caused by the policies but stressed they were essential for long-term economic stability. He pointed to significant progress in reducing inflation, stating, “The first reaction was high inflation, but it has come down dramatically. Now that it is stable, we can help investors.”
Tinubu reiterated his government’s commitment to transparency and growth, urging the World Bank to expedite innovative financing solutions and strengthen its partnership with Nigeria.
