Dele Momodu, a prominent figure in the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), says Nyesom Wike, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), hasn’t gotten over the heartbreak of losing the party’s 2023 presidential ticket to Atiku Abubakar.
According to Momodu, Wike’s lingering frustration is partly to blame for the internal struggles the PDP is dealing with right now.
During an interview with Arise TV on Tuesday, Momodu explained that Wike had been dead certain the ticket was his, but when things didn’t go his way, the loss hit hard.
In case you missed it, Atiku clinched the ticket at the PDP primaries, scoring 371 votes, while Wike, his closest contender, managed 237. Back then, Wike—who was still Rivers State governor—teamed up with four other governors to form the G5, and they openly opposed Atiku in the 2023 election.
Reflecting on the fallout within the PDP after the election, Momodu noted that many expected Wike to move past the defeat, but that hasn’t really happened.
“The first issue,” Momodu said, “was that he (Wike) lost the primary in 2022 to Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, and it seems like since then, he just hasn’t been able to shake off that disappointment.
“Wike was absolutely convinced he’d win the ticket and become Nigeria’s next president. Naturally, losing something you thought was yours hurts. Anyone who’s ever lost anything in life knows that feeling. So, you can’t blame him for feeling bad.
