We Spent N200 Billion Preparing For Census – NPC

The National Population Commission (NPC) of Nigeria has responded to concerns over the expenditure of N200 billion in preparation for the national census, which has been indefinitely postponed. The commission clarified that the funds were spent over the course of eight years since 2014 when preparations for the census began.

In a statement released by Isiaka Yahaya, the Director of Public Affairs at NPC, it was emphasized that the monetary value of the data collected during the preparation phase alone is estimated to be in the trillions of naira.

The commission has utilized these funds to develop enumeration area frames, which will not only serve the upcoming census but also future censuses and surveys.

Additionally, the recruitment exercise for the census has generated a comprehensive database of applicants, including their personal information such as names, ages, qualifications, addresses, phone numbers, and account numbers.

Yahaya addressed what he referred to as “skewed media narratives” surrounding the expenditure, suggesting that these narratives were an attempt to divert attention from the significant work the commission has accomplished thus far.

He further emphasized that the preparations made by NPC have not only enhanced the quality and scope of arrangements for the forthcoming census but will also contribute to making future censuses more cost-effective.

The NPC assured Nigerians and development partners of its unwavering commitment and competence in delivering credible, reliable, and acceptable census data.

Despite the indefinite postponement, the commission remains dedicated to its mission and is confident that the investments made in the preparation phase will yield long-term benefits for the country.

The new administration is yet to determine a future date for the census, as the decision to postpone it indefinitely was approved by former President Muhammadu Buhari.
