We Have Not Received 2022 USAID $1m Donation For Flood Victims – NEMA DG

The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Engr. Habib Mustapha Ahmed, has confirmed that the agency has not yet received the $1 million donation from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) intended to support Nigerian flood victims in 2022.

The announcement of the donation was made by the US embassy and US Ambassador, Mary Beth Leonard, in October 2022.

However, during a press briefing in Abuja, the NEMA boss stated that more than 10 months have passed since the announcement, and the agency has not yet received the funds.

The heavy rainfall in Nigeria in 2022 resulted in widespread flooding, affecting nearly 2.8 million people across the nation.

Many homes were damaged or destroyed, leading to the displacement of millions.

In response, the US had pledged $1 million in humanitarian assistance through USAID to provide emergency shelter, relief items, hygiene kits, and cash assistance to those affected by the floods and the concurrent cholera outbreak.

Ahmed remarked, “I read about the story in the papers last year, but I can confirm that we have not received any $1 million from USAID.”

In the meantime, the Governor of Zamfara State, Dr. Dauda Lawal, visited NEMA’s headquarters seeking humanitarian assistance for victims of banditry in the state.

He highlighted the large number of internally displaced persons (IDPs) due to ongoing issues related to banditry.

In response, NEMA DG Ahmed assured the governor of the agency’s commitment to helping address the humanitarian challenges arising from bandit and terrorist activities.

He expressed, “I commend the governor for appreciating NEMA’s interventions, and I assure you that Zamfara will receive all the assistance they need, just like any other state in the federation.”…[CONTINUE READING HERE]>>
