The Borno State Government has taken steps to alleviate the economic challenges brought about by the removal of fuel subsidies by disbursing the sum of N382.6 million to settle outstanding scholarship allowances. This move aims to provide relief to parents and students affected by the subsidy removal.
Malam Bala Isa, the Executive Secretary of the State Scholarship Board, made this announcement during a media briefing in Maiduguri on Saturday.
He revealed that Governor Babagana Zulum initiated the disbursement to assist parents facing economic difficulties due to the subsidy removal.
The outstanding allowances pertain to the 2021/2022 academic session and will benefit 14,416 indigenes of Borno State enrolled in more than 30 universities within and beyond the state’s borders.
Malam Isa elaborated, “Governor Babagana Zulum has released the sum of N382,600.00 for the continuation of payments of the 2021/2022 outstanding scholarships allowances.
The students are resuming for academic activities at a time when parents are presently faced with various economic challenges.”
He emphasized that this disbursement, totaling over 300 million naira, will significantly alleviate the financial strain on parents, allowing them to meet their children’s academic needs.
Malam Isa further conveyed Governor Zulum’s message to the students, urging them to remain dedicated and committed to their studies while responsibly utilizing their allowances for educational purposes.
For students in medical colleges and the faculty of engineering, each will receive N50,000, while those in core sciences, social and management sciences, as well as humanities, will receive N30,000 each.
Comrade Kyari Ahmed, the President of the National Association of Borno State Students (NUBOSS), expressed gratitude to Governor Zulum for the timely release of the allowances.
