A Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has brought attention to a leaked Lagos State Government memo concerning the secret mass burial of 103 victims of the October 2020 EndSARS protest. This revelation is just one of the surprises that have come to light, according to the senior lawyer.

Adegboruwa, who was a member of the Lagos State Judicial Panel of Inquiry on Restitution for Victims of SARS Related Abuses and other matters, made these remarks during an episode of Channels Television’s Law Weekly. The programme, which focuses on the legal profession, airs every Saturday at 03:30 pm.

The senior lawyer emphasized that there is no one in Nigeria who could deny the existence of fatalities on the night of October 20, 2020, during the Lekki Toll Gate incident. On that fateful night, soldiers stormed the Lekki Toll Gate, where youths had gathered to protest against police brutality and extrajudicial killings.

Adegboruwa acknowledged that while the exact number of fatalities may be subject to debate, denying the deaths or the spilling of blood due to gunshots by the Nigerian Army would be a disservice to those who lost their lives.

Recently, a leaked memo addressed to the Lagos State Ministry of Health came to light, indicating the approval of N61,285,000 for the mass burial of 103 individuals identified as 2020 EndSARS victims. The memo, dated July 19, 2023, detailed the steps for processing the funds following Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s approval.

The Lagos State Ministry of Health confirmed the authenticity of the letter in a statement, clarifying that the bodies were not from the Lekki Toll Gate but were instead collected by the Lagos State Environmental Health Unit (SEHMU) from various locations, including Fagba, Ketu, Ikorodu, Orile, Ajegunle, Abule-Egba, Ikeja, Ojota, Ekoro, Ogba, Isolo, and Ajah.

The leaked memo has sparked outrage and raised further questions about the events of October 20th, 2020, and the government’s response to the incident.
