The United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) has designated Nigeria as a principal partner in combating the spread of ISIS and Al-Qaeda-linked groups in West Africa.
During a virtual briefing on Tuesday, AFRICOM Commander General Dagvin Anderson issued a warning, stating that extremist factions are escalating their assaults across the Sahel region and posing a threat to key capitals.
“We clearly see the growing threat as an issue, both from Daesh and al-Qaida. We’re seeing them apply more pressure across the Sahel,” General Anderson said.
He emphasized that this evolving security landscape necessitates robust regional and international collaboration, noting that AFRICOM prioritizes working with willing and capable allies.
Commending Nigeria’s contribution, Anderson cited the country as a standout example of effective partnership in the region. He detailed that the cooperation encompasses intelligence sharing, surveillance and reconnaissance support, and intelligence fusion to bolster Nigeria’s counterterrorism capabilities.
“I’d like to highlight our partnership with Nigeria as a great example of a very willing and capable partner. When we do that, we are much more effective,” he stated.
The AFRICOM commander also referenced the recent Aqaba Process meeting in Rome, which focused on West African terrorism and included Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu. He said the forum has helped solidify collaboration between the two nations.
This strengthened partnership has reportedly led to increased operational support, including the deployment of a specialized U.S. team to assist Nigerian security forces.
Also addressing the briefing, Sergeant Major Garric Banfield highlighted the link between instability and terrorism. “A secure environment leads to a stable environment and goes towards investment and prosperity,” he remarked.
AFRICOM’s statements reflect the deepening counterterrorism alliance between the U.S. and Nigeria, particularly in intelligence exchange and operational backing, as both countries intensify efforts to suppress extremist violence in West Africa.
