The United Kingdom is considering a ban on the social media platform X following reports that its AI chatbot, Grok, has been used to create explicit images of women and children. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has described this content as “disgraceful” and “not to be tolerated.”
In response to the allegations, Prime Minister Starmer has directed the media regulator, Ofcom, to explore all available options. Ofcom has confirmed it has opened an investigation into X and made urgent contact with the company. The potential action is based on powers granted by the UK’s Online Safety Act of 2023, which gives authorities broad authority to regulate harmful online content, especially material involving children.
The Act allows for the restriction or complete banning of platforms that repeatedly fail to remove illegal content, such as child abuse material and non-consensual explicit images. X, which has an estimated 20 million users in the UK, now faces a formal legal process that could lead to it being blocked nationwide if it fails to address the regulator’s concerns.
X owner Elon Musk has reacted by resharing posts warning against the ban and claiming the platform is the UK’s leading news source. He has previously criticized the Online Safety Act, alleging it suppresses free expression. Any final decision to ban the platform would require a full investigation and legal procedure by Ofcom.
