President Bola Tinubu has called on senators to begin exploring constitutional amendments that would allow for the creation of state police as part of broader efforts to strengthen national security.
The President made the appeal while addressing lawmakers during an interfaith Iftar at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.
Reflecting on Nigeria’s security challenges, Tinubu acknowledged the persistent threats of terrorism, banditry, and insurgency. He urged the Senate to initiate discussions on constitutional reforms that would improve the country’s security framework.
“What I will ask for tonight is for you to start thinking of how best to amend the constitution to incorporate state police for us to secure our country,” he said. He added that such changes would help reclaim forests from criminal groups and free citizens from fear.
Tinubu also praised the National Assembly for its responsible handling of national issues and expressed gratitude for the cooperation extended to his administration.
He emphasised unity, compassion, and shared responsibility in governance, describing the gathering as a reflection of national cohesion and collective commitment to Nigeria’s progress.
The interfaith Iftar served as a platform for leaders to reaffirm their dedication to strengthening constitutional democracy and promoting peace and stability.
