The Federal Government has commenced plans to recruit forest guards nationwide under the Renewed Hope Agenda to tackle insecurity and protect Nigeria’s natural reserves.
The initiative, approved by President Bola Tinubu in May, will see states employ between 2,000 and 5,000 personnel each, depending on their capacity.
National Security Adviser Nuhu Ribadu said the programme is part of ongoing measures to safeguard communities and combat crimes linked to forest hideouts.
He assured Nigerians that the country’s security is in capable hands and urged personnel to remain committed.
The Chairman of NDLEA, Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), also linked drug trafficking to insecurity, noting that over 40,000 drug offenders have been arrested in the last two years, with millions of kilograms of illicit substances seized.
He stressed that no serious security strategy can ignore the fight against drugs.
