Kaduna Tertiary Institutions Union Gives State Govt Seven-Day Ultimatum Over Unmet Demands Or Face Indefinite Strike

The Joint Union of Tertiary Institutions of Kaduna State (JUTIKS) has given the state government a seven-day deadline to meet its long-standing demands or face an indefinite strike starting August 19.

JUTIKS is made up of workers from Nuhu Bamali Polytechnic, Zaria; Kaduna State College of Education, Gidan Waya; Kaduna State College of Nursing Sciences; and Shehu Idris College of Health Sciences and Technology, Makarfi.

In a communiqué issued after a meeting in Kaduna, and signed by Christopher Yarima, Chairman of COEASU Gidan Waya; Abubakar Abdullai, Chairman NASU Makarfi; Abubakar Aliyu, Chairman SSANIP, NBPZ; and other union leaders, the group expressed doubts about the government’s willingness to implement the Consolidated Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Academic Staff Salary Structure (CONPCASS) and the Consolidated Tertiary Educational Institutions Salary Structure (CONTEDISS), which have been pending for 15 years.

While appreciating Governor Uba Sani’s Executive Order approving a 65-year retirement age for academic staff, the union noted that the exclusion of non-academic staff was unacceptable.

They are demanding the immediate implementation of the salary structures and an amendment of the retirement policy to include non-academic staff without extra conditions.
