President Bola Tinubu has reversed the special promotion of his Aide-de-Camp (ADC), Colonel Nurudeen Alowonle Yusuf, to the rank of Brigadier General following widespread discontent within the Nigerian Army.
Military sources told the newsmen that the decision caused significant concern among officers who felt it bypassed standard promotion procedures based on seniority and merit. The reversal came after consultations with top military leaders, who briefed the President on the negative impact on troop morale.
Officers across the armed forces reportedly welcomed the President’s action, with one source stating, “The armed forces are celebrating Tinubu right now.” The ADC had already made full preparations for a decoration ceremony before the promotion was rescinded.
The review reportedly extended to the entire presidential security detail, with calls to reassign senior officials whose current roles were seen as improperly ranked. This includes the Chief Detail from the DSS and the Chief Personal Security Officer from the police, whose ranks were said to be misaligned with their positions.
The initial promotion had sparked questions about fairness and established protocols within the Army’s promotion system.
