The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has strongly condemned the Nigeria Police Force’s plan to resume enforcement of the tinted glass permit policy starting January 2, 2026, calling it a “blatant disregard for the rule of law.”
The Police had announced the enforcement, citing rising vehicle-related crimes. In response, NBA President Afam Osigwe accused the police of “executive recklessness,” arguing that the move undermines judicial authority while the legality of the policy is being challenged in court.
The NBA filed a lawsuit against the policy at the Federal High Court in Abuja on September 2, 2025, describing it as unconstitutional, illegal, and a form of extortion. The association stated that the police announcement, made just one business day after their counsel gave an undertaking in court, was “reckless and contemptuous.”
The NBA has called on the Inspector-General of Police to immediately withdraw the enforcement directive and await the court’s final ruling. It has also instructed its branches to offer legal aid to anyone affected by the policy and warned of potential legal consequences if the police proceed.
Citing a Supreme Court precedent, the NBA emphasized that undertakings given in court are legally binding. The association has further appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene to protect citizens from undue hardship and uphold the authority of the judiciary.
