Tensions Rise as Burkina Faso Detains 11 Nigerian Military Personnel for Airspace V!olation

The Burkinabe military government in Bobo-Dioulasso, southwest Burkina Faso, has detained eleven Nigerian military personnel following an incident involving a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft that reportedly made an emergency landing after violating AES airspace.

According to a statement from the AES, the aircraft breached Burkinabe airspace before landing. In response to the violation, the AES stressed its commitment to neutralize any unauthorized aircraft infringing on its airspace.

The AES noted,

“An investigation was swiftly launched by the appropriate Burkinabe authorities, confirming that the aircraft lacked the necessary authorization to traverse Burkinabe territory. The Confederation of the Sahel States has condemned this breach of airspace and the sovereignty of its member nations.

“In light of this unfriendly act, which disregards international law and aviation regulations, measures have been implemented to safeguard the integrity of confederal airspace, the sovereignty of our member states, and the safety of the citizens within the AES Confederation.

“Consequently, under the directive of the Heads of State, the air defense and anti-aircraft systems across the confederal space have been put on high alert as per the Declaration from the College of Heads of State dated December 22, 2024, and have been empowered to neutralize any aircraft that infringes on confederal airspace.”
