Afrobeat musician Seun Kuti has shared a provocative formula for success in the contemporary entertainment industry, arguing that public relations (PR) is overwhelmingly more important than talent or effort. On a recent podcast, he broke it down as “2% talent, 5% hard work and 93% PR.”
Kuti credited his late father, Fela, for raising him with a strong individual identity, so he never struggled to find his artistic voice. He admitted he is only now learning the “PR game,” stating the modern era prioritizes visibility and branding above all else.
When the host suggested this reality was disheartening, Kuti disagreed, framing it as a simple necessity for adaptation. “It’s not sad. You just need to learn it,” he said, adding that he enjoys learning and is improving his skills.
To support his point, he cited the example of a globally famous celebrity restaurateur, arguing that the individual’s fame is propelled by PR rather than the quality of the food—though he clarified he had never personally dined there.
According to Seun Kuti, mastering public relations has become an essential, non-negotiable component for achieving success in any field today.
