Fresh political reports suggest President Bola Tinubu is considering at least four prominent northern Christian leaders as potential running mates for the 2027 presidential election. According to multiple sources, names under discussion within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) include:
· Most Rev. Matthew Hassan Kukah, the Catholic Bishop of Sokoto.
· Lt-Gen. Christopher Musa (retd), the current Minister of Defence.
· Hon. Yakubu Dogara, former Speaker of the House of Representatives.
· Caleb Mutfwang, the Governor of Plateau State.
Analysts indicate that this move is part of a strategic review aimed at achieving religious and regional balance in the party’s future ticket. The renewed focus follows sustained criticism of the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket in the 2023 elections, which drew scrutiny from both domestic and international observers, including remarks from U.S. officials on the need for more inclusive governance in Nigeria. The 1999 Constitution allows the presidential candidate to select a running mate from any part of the country, providing the flexibility to address these political considerations.
