A new report claims that Real Madrid president Florentino Pérez played a decisive role in helping his historic rival, Joan Laporta, return as president of FC Barcelona in 2021. Laporta faced a key electoral requirement: depositing €124.6 million as a financial guarantee, a sum he could not raise independently due to Barcelona’s dire financial state.
According to reports, Florentino Pérez personally intervened by contacting Sabadell Bank, which was hesitant to approve the transaction given Barcelona’s precarious finances. Despite the bank’s concerns, Pérez reportedly persisted in his advocacy, leading the bank to finally approve the payment. This enabled Laporta to meet the requirement and secure the presidency.
Pérez’s unusual support is said to have been motivated by his belief at the time that Laporta was an ally in the proposed European Super League project. Notably, Barcelona later withdrew from that controversial league initiative, a decision made after Laporta had already taken office with the critical financial backing from his club’s arch-rival.
