President Tinubu to be Hosted by King Charles on Historic UK State Visit

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will host President Bola Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu at Windsor Castle in March, marking Nigeria’s first state visit to the United Kingdom in 37 years.

Buckingham Palace has confirmed the historic visit, scheduled for March 18-19, describing it as a significant landmark in UK-Nigeria relations. The last Nigerian head of state to be accorded this highest diplomatic honour was General Ibrahim Babangida, who visited Queen Elizabeth II in 1989.

State visits are characterized by a full program of royal ceremonies, including military honours, carriage processions, and a formal state banquet, alongside substantive political meetings with senior UK government officials.

This will be President Tinubu’s first state visit since taking office. However, he previously met King Charles in September 2024 for an audience at Buckingham Palace, followed by further discussions during the COP28 climate summit in Dubai.

The visit occurs against a backdrop of deepening economic and political ties. Bilateral trade between the two nations exceeded £8 billion in the year leading to October, establishing Nigeria as a key UK partner in Africa. The two countries also signed a new trade and investment pact in 2024 to expand commercial opportunities.

While the full itinerary for the March visit is still to be released, it is anticipated to feature high-level talks and symbolic events designed to cement long-term cooperation.

King Charles has maintained a strong personal connection with Nigeria, a fellow Commonwealth realm. He has frequently expressed admiration for Nigerian culture, including its use of Pidgin English and the global influence of Afrobeats music. Before his accession, he visited Nigeria four times between 1990 and 2018, with Queen Camilla accompanying him on the most recent trip.
