In a landmark development, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been elected as the new Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
The announcement was made during the 63rd Ordinary Session of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, held in Guinea-Bissau on Sunday.
Taking the reins from President Umaro Embalo of Guinea Bissau, President Tinubu expressed his gratitude and outlined his vision for the regional organization.
In his inaugural address, he emphasized the importance of democracy and stated, “We will take democracy seriously, Democracy is very tough but it is the best form of government.”
President Tinubu’s ascension to the chairmanship marks a significant milestone in his leadership journey. Notably, the 63rd Ordinary Session summit served as his first official engagement on the African continent since assuming office on May 29, 2023.
As the new ECOWAS chair, President Tinubu will play a crucial role in promoting regional integration, economic cooperation, and peace within the member states of ECOWAS. The organization encompasses 15 West African countries, including Nigeria, Ghana, Senegal, and Ivory Coast, among others.
