Osimhen Breaks 24-Year Jinx As Nigeria Sweeps CAF Awards
Super Eagles and Napoli forward, Victor Osimhen, has emerged as the CAF 2023 Player of the Year in the male category.
He defeated Morocco’s Achraf Hakimi and Egyptian attacker, Mohamed Salah, to the prized award on Monday at Marakesh in Morocco.
Osimhen had an exceptional year last season playing a vital role in his team’s Serie A title victory after a 33-year wait.
The Super Eagles forward continental recognition concluded Nigeria’s 24-year-old anticipation for Africa’s premier individual award last secured by Kanu Nwankwo in 1999.
Osimhen netted 26 goals in the league to become the inaugural African to secure the Pichichi (top scorer) award, surpassing George Weah’s record as the top-scoring player from the continent in the Italian top flight.
His flawless form earned him a spot in the Serie A Team of the Year, and he also secured the Best Striker accolade.
Previously, Osimhen secured the 8th position in the 2023 Ballon d’Or ranking, becoming the top-ranked African for the year and the highest-ranked Nigerian in the history of the award.
