The Nigeria Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has officially acknowledged the receipt of requests from undisclosed individuals to topple President Bola Tinubu’s administration, amidst the ongoing political crisis in Niger Republic.
The Nigerien military recently executed a coup, removing the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum.
The DHQ suggests that those advocating for the coup are citing alleged inadequate welfare within the Armed Forces as their motivation.
Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, the Director of Defence Information, verified this development through a statement posted on the DHQ’s official Twitter account @DefenceInfoNG.
The military has strongly disapproved of the call for military intervention in Nigeria’s democracy, naming it as ‘unpatriotic’ and ‘malicious.’ They view such attempts as an endeavor to divert the focus of the Armed Forces from their constitutional duties.
While acknowledging the importance of ensuring the well-being of military personnel, the DHQ’s leadership affirmed its unwavering commitment to upholding democratic principles in Nigeria.
“…we vehemently oppose any efforts by individuals or groups to incite the law-abiding Armed Forces of Nigeria into engaging in any unconstitutional change of government within our nation. We wish to unequivocally state that the military embraces and thrives under democracy and will abstain from any action that undermines the hard-won democracy of our country.
“Under the leadership of Chief of Defence Staff, General CG Musa, the AFN is firmly dedicated to the complete subordination of the Armed Forces to constitutional authority, under the esteemed guidance of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and will not be swayed from its well-defined roles as stipulated in the 1999 constitution (as amended),” articulated Gusau.
