In a stunning turn of events, Nigerien soldiers declared a coup on national TV in the early hours of Thursday, July 27.
The military action came just hours after troops surrounded the residence and offices of President Mohamed Bazoum and vehemently refused to release him.
During the broadcast, 10 senior officers led by Col Maj Amadou Abdramane announced that the National Council of the State Guard of the Nation had taken control. They declared the dissolution of the constitution, the suspension of all institutions, and the closure of the nation’s borders.
The coup leaders cited the deteriorating security situation and the lack of effective economic and social governance as reasons for their actions. They asserted that the decision to end the current regime was made in response to these critical issues.
As a result of the coup, all institutions have been suspended, and the day-to-day affairs of the country will be managed by the heads of the ministries. The soldiers called on all external partners not to interfere in Niger’s internal affairs during this turbulent period.
Furthermore, the coup leaders announced the closure of all land and air borders until the situation stabilizes. This measure is likely aimed at maintaining control and preventing any potential external influence.
The detention of President Mohamed Bazoum and the declaration of a coup have sent shockwaves across Niger and the international community. The unfolding situation has raised concerns about the country’s stability and the potential implications for regional security and governance. (CONTINUE READING HERE)
