Nigeria Intensifies Diplomatic Talks for Release of Aircraft, 11 Soldiers Detained in Burkina Faso

The Federal Government of Nigeria has confirmed that a Nigerian Air Force C-130 aircraft and 11 soldiers remain detained in Burkina Faso, with high-level diplomatic negotiations underway to secure their release.

The incident began on Monday when the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) aircraft, en route to Portugal for scheduled maintenance, executed a precautionary landing in Bobo Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, due to reported technical faults. However, authorities from Burkina Faso and the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) contested this explanation, stating the aircraft entered their airspace without proper clearance, which prompted them to force the plane to land.

Diplomatic Channels Activated
Addressing the situation, Mr. Kimiebi Ebienfa, spokesperson for Nigeria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated, “We are engaging them, but they are yet to be released.” He confirmed that the ministry has assumed control of the negotiations from the Nigerian Air Force to diplomatically resolve the matter and ensure the safe return of both personnel and the aircraft.

Retired Officers Caution Against Speculation
With the ministry now leading sensitive discussions and withholding operational details, attempts to gauge the implications of detaining a military aircraft have been met with caution. Retired NAF officers contacted for insight declined to speculate, emphasizing the potential risks of public commentary while government-to-government talks are ongoing.

One retired officer, speaking anonymously, advised, “In such situations when the facts of the discussions are not made clear yet, assuming a conclusion may jeopardise the government-to-government discussion and lead to some avoidable risks. So I advise we wait for the outcome of the negotiation.”

Wider Regional Tensions as Potential Context
Background reports suggest the detention may be influenced by broader regional political tensions. Burkina Faso, along with Mali and Niger all suspended from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) following military coups—are reportedly facing severe economic strain due to bloc sanctions and severed ties with former partners like France.

According to analysis from one retired officer, these nations may view the detained aircraft and personnel as a “bargaining chip.” The officer posited, “They feel the way to break out of the difficult situation they find themselves in is to use Nigeria to negotiate a way out or secure some economic assistance.” This perspective highlights the complex geopolitical undercurrents surrounding the incident, as Nigeria leads the ECOWAS efforts to restore democratic order in the region.

The Nigerian Air Force has maintained silence on the matter since the Ministry of Foreign Affairs took over the negotiations.
