Nigeria has officially established a new tax regime for cryptocurrencies, which will take full effect in 2026. The framework, enacted under the Nigerian Tax Administration Act (NTAA) 2025, aims to formalize the rapidly expanding digital asset market by mandating that all crypto transactions be linked to verified Tax Identification Numbers (TINs) and National Identification Numbers (NINs).
Under the new rules, Virtual Asset Service Providers (VASPs) including exchanges and brokers must register with tax authorities, perform rigorous Know Your Customer (KYC) checks, and submit monthly transaction reports. They are also required to maintain customer and transaction records for a minimum of seven years and report large or suspicious activities to the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU). Non-compliance carries severe penalties, including fines of up to ₦10 million and license revocation.
The government will rely on VASPs for oversight rather than monitoring the blockchain directly. This strategy preserves the underlying technology’s security while bringing Nigeria in line with global standards like the OECD’s Crypto Asset Reporting Framework (CARF).
Nigeria is a leading global crypto market, with an estimated $92.1 billion in transaction volume between July 2024 and June 2025. Even partial taxation of this activity is projected to generate significant revenue, supporting the government’s goal of raising the tax-to-GDP ratio to 18% by 2027 and reducing dependence on oil.
Overall, the 2026 Crypto Tax Law is designed to create a transparent, enforceable system that boosts market credibility, encourages formalization, and provides a new revenue stream for the government, fundamentally reshaping Nigeria’s digital economy.
