Controversial Nigerian singer Portable has been arraigned at the Federal High Court in Ota, Ogun State, on a nine-count criminal charge. The charges, filed by the Ogun State Police Command, include assault, theft, causing harm, and resisting arrest.
His court appearance follows a viral video showing him in police custody, reportedly connected to a complaint filed by his estranged partner, Ashabi Simple. The prosecution alleges that Portable led an attack on Ashabi Simple alongside several police officers and others at his bar in Iyana Ilogbo on New Year’s Day.
Additional charges involve the theft of a Mercedes-Benz E300 valued at N12 million, belonging to one of the other named victims in the case. During the hearing, two siblings of Ashabi Simple testified as witnesses to the alleged assault, though she was not present in court.
The police further accused Portable of assaulting and obstructing a female police inspector, Ogungbe Olayemi, while she was performing her official duties. The presiding judge denied Portable bail, citing the absence of the allegedly assaulted police officer in court. The judge insisted on seeing the officer before ruling on the bail application. Consequently, Portable was remanded in custody until a fresh bail consideration on January 19.
