Nigeria’s Prison Chief Praises Staff for Zero Jail Breaks in 2023

The head of Nigeria’s prison system, Haliru Nababa, applauded his staff for keeping inmates locked up tight in 2023.

After deadly escapes from prisons in recent years, Nababa credited the shift to his team’s renewed focus and dedication.

Speaking at a year-end party and awards ceremony, Nababa reaffirmed the prison service’s commitment to both secure facilities and rehabilitate prisoners across the country. “This year will remain memorable for the service as we strive to meet our general mandates of ensuring water-tight security in and around correctional facilities.”

“This also includes ensuring that inmates are properly rehabilitated and reformed for proper reintegration.”

“As a service, we are committed to fostering a system that is efficient and sustainable towards improving public safety and national security in general.”

“In order to achieve this, the officers and men who form the fulcrum of our human resources are paramount. Hence, we are committed towards improving their capacity as well as their welfare,” he said.

Nababa promised the service would continue to honor and reward outstanding performance, dedication, and hard work. He urged award recipients to see their recognition as a call to further commit to peacebuilding efforts within prisons, across Nigeria, and even around the world.

High-profile breakouts in 2021 and 2022 prompted the then-Interior Minister, Rauf Aregbesola, to pledge improvements in prison security to stop both internal and external threats.
