The Edo State Police Command has arrested two men, including a Navy officer and an officer of the Nigerian Correctional Service, for their involvement in an armed robbery and car snatching incident in Sapele, Delta State. The suspects, identified as Ibrahim Adamu, 25, and Abdullahi Abdulwahab, 26, were apprehended in Ekpoma by a crack team of the command based on credible information. The police also recovered the stolen car and military uniform from the suspects.

The Arrest of the Suspects

According to the spokesperson of the command, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the suspects attacked the driver of an unregistered C300 Mercedes Benz car, snatched the car, and forced him to transfer N400,000 to their account. The suspects were planning to take the car to Abuja to sell it when they were intercepted by the police in Ekpoma. The suspects have confessed to their crime and claimed to be personnel of the Nigerian Navy and Correctional Service, respectively.

Speaking to journalists, Ibrahim Adamu, who was recruited into the Nigeria Navy in 2019, admitted to stealing the Mercedes Benz C300 car in Delta State. He stated that he planned the robbery while on a course in Sapele and convinced Abdulwahab to join him. They tracked down a vehicle without a number plate in Sapele and asked the driver to stop, but he refused. They pursued him to a village where he finally stopped. Adamu told him that they were taking him to their office for driving an unregistered vehicle, but the driver pleaded to settle the matter there. However, they refused and forced him to transfer N400,000 to their account.

Adamu took over the steering from the driver and was driving to Abuja to sell the car when the police arrested them on Oghara Road. He confessed that this was not his first time committing such a crime.

The Confession of Abdullahi Abdulwahab

Abdullahi Abdulwahab, a correctional service officer in Kaduna State, stated that Adamu invited him to Warri for the job. He claimed that this was his first time being involved in a robbery and that he only agreed to join Adamu because he promised they would make money. They discussed using a tricycle from Warri to Sapele for the operation.

The Implications of the Arrest

The arrest of the two officers raises questions about the recruitment process and the screening of personnel in the Nigerian Navy and Correctional Service. It also highlights the issue of corruption and misconduct within the security forces, which undermines public trust and confidence in law enforcement agencies. The Nigerian government must take steps to address these issues and ensure that only qualified and trustworthy individuals are recruited into the security forces.

Conclusion

The arrest of the Navy officer and Correctional Service officer for armed robbery and car snatching is a reminder of the need for effective screening and monitoring of personnel in the Nigerian security forces. It is also a call for greater transparency and accountability in the conduct of law enforcement agencies. The police should be commended for their efforts in apprehending the suspects and bringing them to justice.
