Music producer Sam Klef has called on Nigerian musicians to re-evaluate their position in the global industry, advocating for greater self-worth, discipline, and respect in the wake of this year’s Grammy Awards.
In a post on X, Klef urged artists to recognise their value and reject any treatment that undermines their contributions on the world stage. He pointed to past practices, like Nigerian artists receiving BET Awards backstage, as examples of the disrespect that should no longer be tolerated.
He credited superstar Wizkid with helping to change this narrative by insisting on proper recognition, a stance Klef believes paved the way for Afrobeats’ current prominence on major international platforms. He argued that the genre’s global celebration today stems from confidence, consistency, and self-respect.
Klef also offered advice to upcoming artists, emphasising the importance of respecting industry veterans, remaining loyal to early supporters, and publicly honouring their mentors. He stressed that showing appreciation does not lessen one’s own success but instead strengthens unity and fosters collective progress within the music community.
