Lalong Steps Down as Minister in Tinubu’s Cabinet, Moves on to Senate

Former Plateau Governor, Simon Lalong, officially quit his job as Minister of Labour and Employment on Tuesday.

His spokesman, Dr. Simon Macham, confirmed this in a statement.

Lalong sent his resignation letter to President Tinubu in Abuja. He’ll soon take his seat as the Plateau South Senator, thanks to a court ruling.

In his letter, Lalong mentioned the court’s decision naming him the rightful Senator. He also asked INEC to give him his official certificate.

Freshreporters News reports that Lalong admitted it was a tough choice to resign, considering the President’s trust in him as Minister. He also mentioned his key role in leading the winning APC campaign team.

What Lalong Said: He stressed that resigning wasn’t easy, given the President’s trust and his own role in the campaign. But after talks with the President, key players, and his voters, he felt it was the best way to serve the government’s “Renewed Hope” agenda and democracy in general.

What You Need to Know: On November 7, a court declared Lalong the winner of the Plateau South Senatorial election.

After the ruling, Lalong considered whether to stay in the cabinet or become a Senator.

Lalong isn’t the first minister to leave the cabinet for another political goal. In 2022, ten ministers under President Buhari quit to run for President.
