Katsina State Defends Controversial Plan to Release 70 Suspected Bándits

The Katsina State Government has defended its controversial plan to release 70 individuals suspected of banditry, framing the move as a necessary step to uphold existing peace agreements with armed groups in the state.

The clarification from Commissioner for Internal Security, Nasir Muazu, came after public outcry over a leaked “secret” government letter to the state’s Chief Judge, requesting judicial support for the suspects’ release. The letter listed 48 suspects facing criminal trials and an additional 22 awaiting trial in higher courts, proposing their freedom as a condition for sustaining a peace accord.

Muazu argued that the ongoing peace initiative has already led to the release of approximately 1,000 abducted individuals in several local governments. He likened the release of the suspects to a wartime prisoner exchange, citing historical precedents from Nigeria’s civil war. He asserted that the Ministry’s actions are legal and that anyone opposed could seek redress through the courts. Critics, however, warn that freeing such suspects undermines justice for victims and could pose a significant security risk.
