Japa: Why Nurses Should Not Be Stopped From Leaving The Country – Peter Obi

Peter Obi, the Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, believes Nigerian nurses and other professionals seeking better opportunities abroad shouldn’t be held back. In fact, he sees it as a win-win for the country.

Speaking on Monday at St. Charles Borromeo College of Nursing and Midwifery in Onitsha, Obi stressed that migration could help Nigeria through foreign remittances. “Diaspora remittance is also a form of revenue generation,” he pointed out.

While donating to the college, Obi emphasized the importance of education and healthcare, calling them the “currencies of the future.” With a population of over 200 million, he argued that leaders should focus on training people rather than trying to limit their movement.

“We have 200 million people,” he said. “Let us educate them. Let those who want to go out, go, and let those who want to stay, stay.”

Obi’s tone was upbeat and hopeful as he shared his vision of investment in knowledge and health. “What we are doing is not charity; we are rather investing in you,” he told the students. “We need to invest in knowledge and health because it is the future. Your profession is lucrative—you’re being looked for all over the world.”

He also mentioned a conversation with the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria, where he urged them to stop blocking people from leaving the country. Obi explained, “I told Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria that they should stop denying anybody from leaving Nigeria for greener pastures.”

The former Anambra governor expressed his desire to make life better for young Nigerians, revealing that his donations come from a place of genuine care. “If you see me going round trying to donate, it is not anything but because we want to make life better for you all. My children will not attend that university, and I can sit down and use the money to add more chieftaincy to my name, but that is not how to develop the future.”

He added that his journey wouldn’t end in Onitsha, hinting at another stop the next day. “I will be in the College of Nursing Anyingba tomorrow,” Obi shared. “They need my assistance to get accreditation, and I will be there to support them, so that they can get it.”

With passion in his words and hope in his actions, Obi left the audience with a powerful message—Nigerians should pursue opportunities wherever they find them, while leaders must ensure the next generation is well-prepared for the future…[CONTINUE READING HERE]>>
