CAF is fuming over the mess Nigeria’s Super Eagles had to deal with at a Libyan airport.
Freshreporters News reports that the football body let its frustration be known in a strongly worded statement on Monday, titled, “CAF Views the Disturbing and Unacceptable Experiences of the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) at an Airport in Libya in a Very Serious Light.”
CAF wasted no time in getting both Libyan and Nigerian authorities involved, following reports that the players and staff were left high and dry for hours, stuck in frustrating conditions with no help in sight.
“The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has reached out to the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after learning that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical crew were stranded in tough conditions for several hours at an airport where the team had reportedly been directed to land by the Libyan authorities.
The matter is now with the CAF Disciplinary Board, and anyone found guilty of violating CAF Statutes and Regulations will face the consequences, the statement reveals.
To jog your memory, the Super Eagles touched down in Libya on Sunday, October 13, gearing up for their 2025 AFCON qualifiers against the Mediterranean Knights. The match is set for 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 15.
But things took a nosedive when their flight, which was supposed to land in Benghazi, got rerouted to Al Abraq Airport—a small airport mostly used for hajj pilgrimages. From there, everything went south.
For over 13 hours, the Super Eagles were left stranded with no support from the Libyan Football Federation. According to the NFF’s communications team, the unexpected diversion caught the squad completely off-guard, leaving players and officials exhausted and baffled.
Adding salt to the wound, the team was stuck without transportation to their hotel in Benghazi, which is a grueling three-hour drive away.
