INEC Vows Crackdown on Vote Buying Ahead of FCT Area Council Polls

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured residents of the Federal Capital Territory of a peaceful and credible Area Council election scheduled for Saturday, February 21, 2026.

Speaking at a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan revealed that over 1.6 million registered voters are expected to cast their ballots across 2,822 polling units, with 570 candidates contesting 68 seats.

Amupitan emphasised that the Commission has no preferred candidate and described the electoral process as a shared responsibility among INEC, political parties, security agencies, and voters.

He issued a strong warning against vote buying and other electoral malpractices, noting that security agencies—including the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) will be deployed to monitor the process.

The INEC Chairman confirmed that the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) will be used across all polling units, and results will be uploaded to the INEC Result Viewing (IREV) portal.

He also announced that 89 observer groups and approximately 700 journalists have been accredited to monitor the election.
