A High Court in Calabar, Cross River State, has sentenced 39-year-old Usual Etim Udo to life imprisonment for the rape of an eight-year-old girl.
The incident took place in Calabar in March 2025.
The verdict was delivered on Tuesday, February 24, 2026, by Hon. Justice Blessing Egwu.
In a statement following the ruling, the Basic Rights Counsel Initiative (BRCI) said the judgment affirms that children’s rights are legally enforceable and that sexual violence against minors attracts severe penalties under the law.
“A child was harmed. The justice system responded. The court has now delivered its judgment,” the statement read.
BRCI added that the outcome reflects what can be achieved when state institutions perform their duties thoroughly and without compromise. The organisation reaffirmed its commitment to pursuing justice and supporting survivors.
