The French government claims that the decision to make abortion a constitutional right was made in response to US laws becoming more restrictive, making France the first nation in fifty years to do so.
The law passed by a vote of 780 to 72 at a unique joint session of parliament held in the Palace of Versailles.
A bill to change Article 34 of the French constitution to state that “the law determines the conditions by which is exercised the freedom of women to have recourse to an abortion, which is guaranteed” has already been approved by the National Assembly and the Senate.
“We’re sending a message to all women: your body belongs to you and no one can decide for you,” Prime Minister Gabriel Attal told MPs and senators gathered for a special vote under the gilded ceilings of the Versailles.
Women’s rights activists celebrated the measure that President Emmanuel Macron had promised, hailing jubilant scenes of celebration in the hall and throughout France.
