The Nasarawa State Government has announced plans to demolish buildings constructed along waterways as a proactive measure to prevent flooding.
FRESHREPORTERS MEDIA reports that Mr. Yakubu Kwanta, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, shared this information during a press briefing in Lafia on Saturday, following the August environmental sanitation exercise.
Representing the commissioner, Malam Abubakar Mohammed, the Chief Environment Officer and Chief Prosecutor of the ministry, stated that the government is taking action to avert potential disasters.
The decision to clear these structures is in response to the recent flood prediction by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NIMET), which identified 25 states, including Nasarawa, at risk.
He stressed that due to the devastating impact of floods in the state’s recent history, the ministry is determined to ensure that waterways remain unobstructed. Mohammed emphasized that blocking waterways can lead to catastrophe, as water will eventually find its own path.
Residents living in flood-prone areas have been instructed to relocate to safer zones. The commissioner expressed contentment with the public’s cooperation during the monthly sanitation exercise.
He commended traditional leaders, area council chairmen, and security agencies for their efforts in making the exercise successful.
During the exercise, around 85 percent of residents adhered to the regulations by closing their shops and businesses.
The state adhered to the temporary shutdown in accordance with the law, allowing only essential service providers with proper permissions to operate.
The commissioner urged the public to maintain clean environments to prevent disease outbreaks.
