The Minister of Art, Culture and Creative Economy, Hannatu Musawa, has announced that the Federal Government will commence planning for the 2026 ‘Detty December’ festivities as early as March this year.
Appearing on the ‘MIC ON’ podcast hosted by Seun Okinbaloye, the Minister stated that the 2025 season yielded more benefits than drawbacks, with positive tourism numbers and economic impact outweighing the challenges encountered.
‘Detty December’ describes Nigeria’s vibrant series of year-end concerts, parties, and social events, particularly in Lagos, which has grown into a prime hub for both domestic and international revelers.
Musawa cited key issues from the last season, including a shortage of lodging, inflated prices from vendors, and major traffic gridlock. She emphasized that regulatory measures are essential to maintain the season’s popularity and accessibility.
“We are currently reviewing the 2025 edition. Overall, the positives outweighed the negatives. On the challenges, the accommodation crunch and vendor overpricing are the major concerns we must address,” she explained.
The Minister outlined an initiative to decentralize the celebrations by fostering events in other states like Calabar, Enugu, and Plateau, aiming to spread tourism benefits nationwide.
“We plan to broaden the scope by generating more activities and content across the country. The promotional drive for this year’s Detty December will begin in March,” Musawa added.
She also highlighted that the upcoming new Lagos airport will enhance the visitor experience. Musawa called for greater government investment in infrastructure, hospitality, and creative sector funding.
Authorities must tackle the issues of exorbitant pricing and traffic, she urged, cautioning that unchecked costs could make the festivities exclusive and deter potential visitors.
“The government certainly needs to step in to regulate pricing and ensure affordability. This is crucial so that people continue to see Nigeria as the premier destination each December,” Musawa stated.
