Dismissed Cop Nabbed in Minna for Impèrsonàtion, Röbbèry, and Extörtion

The Niger State Police Command has arrested a 30-year-old former police officer, Haruna Haggai, for crimes including impersonation, motorcycle theft, and extortion targeting residents of Minna.

Acting on intelligence and a victim’s complaint, operatives from the Force Intelligence Department and Special Tactical Squad apprehended Haggai at his Sauka-Kahuta residence on the evening of January 16, 2026.

According to a statement from the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Wasiu Abiodun, the suspect posed as a police officer on January 14th. He stopped a motorcycle rider on Kpakungu Road, intimidated him, and seized his Jincheng motorcycle.

The investigation found that Haggai then took the victim on a ride through town, falsely accused him of fraud, and forced him to pay ₦150,000 in the Garatu area before abandoning him and fleeing with the motorcycle.

This arrest is connected to a pattern of alleged criminal activity. Police records show that Haggai was previously arrested in October 2025 for impersonating an EFCC official and extorting ₦400,000, but was released after a settlement was reached out of court.

Authorities also stated that the suspect has been implicated in multiple reports of harassing and terrorizing residents in the Sauka-Kahuta vicinity, robbing them and extorting money and valuables.

Haggai is currently in police custody as the investigation proceeds. The stolen motorcycle has been recovered, and he will be prosecuted in court, with his prior alleged offences considered in the case.
