Federal Government Secures Release of 100 Abdûcted Schoolchildren in Niger

The Federal Government has reportedly secured the freedom of 100 schoolchildren who were kidnapped from St. Mary’s Private Catholic Primary and Secondary School in Papiri, Niger State.

The abduction took place on November 21, 2025, when armed attackers stormed the remote community around 2:00 a.m., operating for nearly three hours and seizing 315 people—including 303 students and 12 teachers.

Security forces, supported by local hunters, conducted wide-ranging search operations in nearby forests. Within the first day, 50 pupils managed to escape and were reunited with their families.

Despite this initial success, 265 victims 253 children and all 12 teachers remained in captivity.

In response, the Federal Government imposed a 24-hour security lockdown and deployed aerial surveillance across parts of Niger, Kebbi, and Kwara States. President Bola Tinubu canceled an international trip to coordinate rescue efforts, and authorities ordered the indefinite closure of all schools in Niger State as well as several federal institutions in high-risk areas.
