A State High Court in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, has convicted Okon Jimmy Ama on charges of incest, assault causing harm, and sexual abuse involving his two underage daughters.
Justice Winifred Effiong delivered the judgment on Thursday, bringing to a close a case that spanned more than a decade.
Ama, a driver and mechanic from Ikot Ekop Village in Mkpat Enin Local Government Area, was arraigned under the Akwa Ibom State Child Rights Law for offences committed in 2015 involving his daughters, then aged 13 and 16.
During the trial, prosecution counsel Ofonime Idio told the court that the defendant repeatedly abused the minors. The court also heard that he assaulted one of the girls, an act that formed part of the charges.
In its final submissions, the prosecution argued that the evidence presented clearly established the offences under the law and urged the court to convict.
Delivering judgment, Justice Effiong ruled that the prosecution had met the burden of proof required in criminal cases, with evidence establishing the essential elements of incest, assault causing harm, and sexual abuse.
The sentences handed down cumulatively amount to 24 years in prison.
