Richmond, Virginia was struck by tragedy on Tuesday when a shooting incident unfolded in Monroe Park, claiming the lives of two individuals. The victims have been identified as Shawn Jackson, an 18-year-old recent high school graduate, and his father Renzo Smith, aged 36.
The shocking incident occurred shortly after Huguenot High School’s graduation ceremony, which took place at the renowned Altria Theater.
The devastating news was shared with the public by community advocate Charles Willis, who leads the organization United Communities Against Crime.
Acting as a spokesperson for the grieving family, Willis released the names and photographs of the victims, urging the Richmond community to support the family in their time of grief.
“The family asked that the Richmond community keep them in your prayers,” Willis stated, highlighting the deep pain and sorrow experienced by Shawn Jackson’s loved ones.
Earlier in the day, Interim Richmond Police Chief Rick Edwards had confirmed the shooting, but had refrained from releasing the name of the teenager involved. Edwards disclosed that Jackson had just taken part in the graduation ceremony, making the tragedy all the more heartbreaking for the community.
