Two Killed And 5 Injured In Shooting Outside Richmond High School Graduation Ceremony

Two individuals were killed and five others sustained injuries during a shooting that occurred outside a high school graduation ceremony.

The Richmond Police Department confirmed that a suspect has been taken into custody and is currently facing multiple charges, including at least two counts of second-degree murder.

The victims have been identified as an 18-year-old man and a 36-year-old man, although their names have not been released yet. Tragically, the 18-year-old victim had been scheduled to graduate on the same day the incident took place.

The severity of the situation was underscored by a 31-year-old gunshot victim who remained in critical condition as of Tuesday night, with his injuries being described as life-threatening. Additionally, four other individuals, aged 14, 32, 55, and 58, suffered injuries that were not deemed to be life-threatening.

At a press conference held by Richmond Police acting chief Rick Edwards, it was revealed that a 19-year-old suspect had been apprehended in connection with the incident. The suspect is currently facing two charges of second-degree murder. Chief Edwards did not disclose the motive behind the shooting but stated that investigators believe the suspect had familiarity with “at least one of the victims.”

Earlier in the day, Chief Edwards had mentioned that two suspects were in custody, but later clarified that one of the detained individuals was not believed to be involved in the shooting. During the investigation, authorities recovered four handguns, although Chief Edwards clarified that at least one of the firearms belonged to the non-involved individual.

The community of Richmond is reeling from the tragic loss of life and the senseless act of violence that disrupted what should have been a joyous occasion. Authorities are actively working to gather more information about the motive behind the incident and any other potential factors involved.
