A tragic incident unfolded in Anambra State when operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) shot and killed a police inspector during a violent clash stemming from mistaken identity.
The incident which happened on the 24th of june 2025 occurred along the Onitsha/Owerri Expressway near Danaks Filling Station in Uli, Ihiala Local Government Area.
According to eyewitness accounts, a team of mobile police officers flagged down an unmarked Toyota Sienna driving against traffic, suspecting foul play.
The DSS operatives inside, dressed in black uniforms and armed with assault rifles, refused to comply with the search, leading to a confrontation that resulted in the fatal shooting of Inspector Bello Abdulahi .
The injured inspector was rushed to Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Ihiala before being transferred to Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital in Nnewi, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
The DSS operatives involved, later identified as personnel attached to the Ihiala Local Government Secretariat, fled the scene immediately after the shooting.
The incident has sparked outrage and calls for better inter-agency coordination to prevent such avoidable tragedies in the future. Authorities have launched an investigation, with the DSS headquarters in Awka formally notified of the incident .
