Eyewitnesses report heavy gunfire with homes and properties set ablaze. This attack follows a deadly pattern seen in recent weeks, including the June 13 massacre in Yelwata, where over 100 people were killed.
Residents are fleeing into nearby bushes, while others remain trapped, unable to escape the violence.
The attack is particularly alarming as it occurred near a military checkpoint, raising questions about the effectiveness of security measures in the region. The repeated assaults suggest a breakdown in security, with armed herdsmen operating with near impunity.
Benue State, often called Nigeria’s “food basket,” has seen its agricultural productivity crippled by relentless violence. Over 5,700 lives have been lost since 2011, with more than 6,500 displaced in June 2025 alone.
The attacks have deepened food insecurity and humanitarian crises, with IDP camps overwhelmed by displaced families, including women, children, and the elderly .
Despite President Tinubu’s directive for security forces to “act decisively,” the killings persist, fueling public outrage. Protests have erupted in Makurdi, with demonstrators demanding government action and justice for victims . The international community, including Pope Leo XIV, has condemned the violence, but without concrete intervention, the cycle of bloodshed threatens to worsen.
