Burkina Faso has released 11 Nigerian Air Force personnel, ending a nine-day diplomatic standoff that began when their aircraft made an emergency landing. The breakthrough followed a high-level Nigerian delegation’s urgent mission to Ouagadougou.
Led by Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Tuggar, the delegation, which included top officials from the Defence Ministry and Air Force headquarters, met directly with Burkinabè authorities, including President Ibrahim Traoré.
In a post-meeting statement, Minister Tuggar framed the discussions as reinforcing long-standing bilateral ties and addressing common security threats. “We exchanged views on cooperation in several sectors. We also discussed the Nigerian aircraft that made an emergency landing in Burkina Faso,” Tuggar stated.
A key moment in the resolution was Nigeria’s diplomatic acknowledgment of procedural errors. Tuggar expressed regret over “irregularities in the authorisation process” for the aircraft’s entry into Burkinabè airspace, while firmly reiterating Nigeria’s respect for the country’s sovereignty and international aviation rules.
The minister also moved to smooth tensions by publicly distancing the Nigerian government from inflammatory comments made by a Nigerian political figure regarding the soldiers’ treatment. “We clearly dissociate ourselves from those comments and express our sincere regrets to the government of Burkina Faso,” he said.
Tuggar commended President Traoré’s government for its “spirit of fraternity” and the proper treatment of the detained personnel. The talks expanded to cover broader regional security collaboration, with Tuggar noting Burkina Faso’s “notable successes in counter-terrorism operations.” He reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to sustained dialogue and enhanced cooperation with Burkina Faso and neighboring states to collectively tackle terrorism and violent extremism.
