Nigerian football icon Ahmed Musa has officially announced his retirement from international football, concluding a storied 15-year tenure with the Super Eagles.
Musa leaves the national team as a record-holder: he is Nigeria’s most capped player with 111 appearances and the country’s all-time top scorer at the FIFA World Cup.
In an emotional statement posted on his social media channels, the former captain reflected on his remarkable journey, which began with his first call-up as a teenager. “From the very first call-up, wearing the green and white meant everything to me,” Musa wrote, describing the privilege of representing Nigeria as the central purpose of his professional life.
He highlighted key career-defining moments, including winning the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations, scoring iconic World Cup goals against Argentina and Iceland, and the honor of captaining the national side.
Musa extended heartfelt gratitude to all teammates, coaches, support staff, administrators, and the unwavering Nigerian fans whose support carried him through triumphs and challenges. “Football gave me a career, but Nigeria gave me meaning,” he stated, adding that the captaincy taught him profound lessons in responsibility, patience, and selfless service.
He signed off with a lasting pledge to the team: “Once an Eagle, always an Eagle.”
Musa’s retirement signifies the end of a significant era in Nigerian football, marked by exceptional longevity, steadfast leadership, and an unwavering dedication to the green and white jersey.
