A courtroom clash has highlighted what appears to be a double standard in the enforcement of cybercrime laws, putting Nigeria’s Department of State Services (DSS) on the defensive during the trial of activist Omoyele Sowore.
The confrontation occurred on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Abuja during cross-examination by Sowore’s lawyer, Marshal Abubakar. In a strategic move, Abubakar presented video evidence featuring former presidential aide Reno Omokri making serious, unprosecuted allegations against President Bola Tinubu on national television.
The footage, played from a flash drive, showed an ARISE News interview from 2023 where Omokri claimed to possess U.S. court documents labelling Tinubu a “drug lord.” A second clip showed Omokri vowing never to align with the President politically.
Abubakar directly challenged the DSS’s first witness, operative Cyril Nosike, who was present in court. The lawyer questioned why Omokri faced no legal consequences for his televised statements and was later reportedly cleared for an ambassadorial role, while Sowore is being prosecuted for calling the President a “criminal” online.
The DSS witness conceded that he could not provide an explanation for the agency’s differing treatment of the two cases.
